Hi All,
I have just had a play around with Flickr and there is a multitude of images there to be accessed. Wow....
As I began a new journey yesterday, by actually entering the classroom and discovering a whole new reality, I can see the benefits of a web based image gallery such as Flickr. The unit of work that is being studied in the Grade 6 class that I am involved with, is travel to a non-English speaking country. With the ultimate aim of having a Travel Expo at the end of the unit. There are many components to this unit that will require web based design and input. We will be creating posters and brochures, all of which will require photos. The ability for the students to visit a website such as Flickr and have millions of photos from which to choose, depending on their requirements, is great.
The power of a photo is significant, and often the emotion and meaning that can be conjured with a single image is worth 1000 words. The ability for students to add these images to their work to enhance and exemplify their argument or point is satisfying and rewarding. As is often said, to see is to believe. This is how the current generation live their lives, evidence is portrayed in the visual. Students require visual evidence, and through photographic images this can be achieved.
Flickr and video websites such as Youtube enable the students to justify their arguments through a visual image. These are empowering and engaging tools that allow students to have original project work. I know that I will be using Flickr in the near future to assist students with their project for the term, and I am sure they will be as excited about its possibilities as I am.
Cheers,
Kylie
